User studies

- User studies are how we gain an understanding of people's behaviors, needs and motivations. We accomplish this through observation techniques, task analysis, and other feedback methodologies. User studies are super valuable for getting rich, qualitative feedback from your customers. They can be a very efficient means to uncover unmet needs and invalidate assumptions. They are super flexible, the yogi or gymnast of testing methods. You can go really broad, perhaps touching several parts of your product experience. And then when necessary, deep dive into an area of interest or known struggle. With user studies, although you may observe usability issues like other tests, in comparison they excel at understanding your customer's behavior. Unlike some testing methods that require very large numbers of people, called a sample size, user studies can be highly effective with a very small sample size, but it's not all sunshine.…
