What you should know

- I have at least five courses that are related to this one and that will help you with this one and I encourage you to watch them all. Here's a quick review. The one you must see is Graphic Design Start to Finish: The Cover which is the first installment of this course. Because the cover reflects the magazine, to design it, we had to made the elemental decisions, what's our page size, what will our text and display typefaces be and what will be the graphical concept be that drives the design? I'd like you to see Magazine Design: Getting Started. This is the satellite view of what makes a magazine, the physical pieces and parts, the front, the middle, the back sections of a magazine and the role each plays, the three levels of reading, from browser level to all in and other pertinent things. Helpful will be Learning Graphic Design: Layouts. This is basic page layout and by basic I mean the knowledge you'll apply to every page you'll ever make. Margin widths, line lengths, text style and size and density, page symmetry and assymetry, things like that. Learning Graphic Design: Set Prefect Text. So important. Text is the anchor of any magazine. This course shows what makes a good text typeface, correct word and letter spacing and hyphenation, how to justify, meaning align text left and right especially on very narrow columns and so on. Drop caps, lead-out text, all the details you need to know to set type really well. Fine text makes reading better. It makes it clearer, easier to understand, it's beautiful and it speaks to your credibility. Finally, Learning Graphic Design: Cropping Photographs, this seems pretty basic but there's probably more to cropping than you know. Lots of opportunity for creative expression and at no cost.
