When you're out of gas, you're out of gas
- In case you hadn't noticed, you are a human being. That statement feels a little ridiculous but it couldn't be more relevant when it comes to creativity. The desire to create is one of our most human qualities. It's an expression of our humanity and being a human means you need things like food and sleep and love and friendship. These elements, believe it or not, are the fuel of creativity. Here we come up against another cultural myth and this time, it's the myth of the miserable, tortured genius. And let me tell you, it's a big one. The idea that negative feelings foster creativity has some foundation. Loneliness, heartbreak, oppression and mourning, to name a few, have led to countless works of art. But being human means having a well of endless emotion to draw inspiration from. There's no reason you need to actually suffer for your craft. As we mature as creators, it's important to allow our external lives to grow…
