A few basics

- Before we dive into LivePages, here are a few basics that I keep in mind. It's common to build a page from top to bottom as though you're typing it or filling it up like water into a glass, but that rarely yields good design. Remember that the viewer and you too see the whole page at once, or a whole spread at once. In other words, how you make it and how it's viewed are not the same. So instead of filling a page, I think in lines. Run a line all the way across a page, or all the way down a page. One can intersect the other. You can do this on the page as a whole, or on small portions of the page. I strive to avoid a design that's stair-stepped and I avoid scattering images around like a scrapbook or furniture arranged in a room unless I have a message-making reason to do that. These approaches appear disorganized and busy. For images on a grid, I work to those lines I've made, either horizontal or vertical. If lines aren't practical, I'll work in clusters.
