Challenge: How much detail is enough?
- So, although we've been working on a scaled down, smaller image in the studio, the exact same principles of vertical lines and blocks of tones still apply when we go out into the urban environment. So, I want to challenge you to set your first drawing outside, applying these principles to it. I want you to look for stillness within the movement because one of the main things that happens when you're out in the street is that it's very easy to become distracted by all the movement happening around you. So, try and find a scene that you would have been put off attempting to draw before, and it probably would have appeared too overwhelming with detail. But think about a simple choice of materials, blocks of tone, greys, or color. Look to see where the light is coming from and if there's any drama being created from it. Don't worry about figures in this first drawing, just try to look for buildings to start with, and just try to simplify as much as possible. So, go out and enjoy…
