- So what I'd like to do now is introduce simplistic tonal blocks of darks and midtones into our line drawing. And this technique will stop you focusing too much on the detail too soon in your drawings and it builds up blocks of shapes and tone that will help with your composition and tonal balance. It's really handy to reveal the light and shadow balance in the subject. I've created a printout with vertical guildelines so you can practice putting in the tonal blocks and when you're confident with the tones, you can apply the same techniques to your line drawing. So I'm just going to block in some simple tones within these shapes just to give you an indication of how I'm looking for that balance between lights and darks all throughout the scenes that I'm sketching. So this is with a warm gray PITT Artist Pen just so I can add some of these darker shades.
