- The challenge was to find a busy street scene, think about everything we've learned. I wanted you to observe vertical architectural structures, street furniture, but also have those natural elements, look for a wide tonal range in your darks and lights and then introduce color contrast in figures. So I came across this caffe scene in Italy, and the first thing that drew my eye was the strong direction of the single light source. Then the really dark of this doorway and the door shadow shape is repeated in an irregular pattern making an interesting backdrop on vertical lines. In contrast to the calm of the vertical lines, there is lots of energy in the criss-cross diagonal lines of the chairs and this is perfect because this is where the movement and flow of people are going to be. This is fantastic silhouette shape between all of the figures and there is different interesting hats and colors and also a bit of greenery here on the left.
