Twilight and nightlight

(light orchestral music) - So night's now fallen and the Duomo looks fantastic all lit up. I'm just going to do a quick sketch of it to show you how I would approach doing a nighttime drawing, and then take it back to the studio to introduce some different materials. (light orchestral music) When you're sketching in the city at night, your main focus is always going to start with a silhouette. So the semicircle of the dome is perfect for this, because the shape of it gives us a real indication of the character of the building even in this really simple form. I'm not too worried about making the whole page dark, I just want to get the main shapes in. So I've also indicated the bottom line of the rooftops, so the main shape of the building is framed by the shadow. I then swap to the moody fine line pen, and I'm looking at the structure of the smaller shapes that fit within the dome. And initially, I'm not looking at any variety of tone, I'm just trying to indicate the lines so I split…
