- [Instructor] Understanding the effect of padding and margins can be difficult just by looking at a page in a browser or in live-view. Even if an element has a background color or image, it's not always possible to tell where the padding or margin is controlling horizontal and vertical space, and that can make a crucial difference to layout, because adjacent vertical margins overlap, but padding never does. For example, in dining.html, down at the bottom is this room service article. It's got a gradient background. But what's creating the horizontal space on either side of this paragraph? Is it the paragraph's margins or padding on the parent element? And what about the vertical space between the heading and the paragraph? That's where Dreamweaver's inspect mode is invaluable. You must be in live-view to turn on inspect mode. You turn it on by clicking this icon that looks like a crosshair site in the common toolbar. There's also a keyboard shortcut.
