Tools for simulation

- To guide the optimization algorithm, we need to provide a set of metrics. These metrics describe our design goals to the algorithm. To calculate these metrics, we can use computer simulation tools which evaluate the performance of our design models based on different criteria. Traditionally, each type of simulation required its own specialized software, for example, Abaqus, Nastran, and Ansys for structural analysis or Radiance and DAYSIM for daylight analysis. Because all these tools existed in separate software packages and required direct human input and user interaction to make them work, they were difficult or impossible to integrate within the automated workflows required by generative design. So with the growing popularity of visual programming languages, such as Grasshopper and Dynamo, many simulation tools are now being developed, not as stand-alone software, but as plug-ins which can be incorporated…
