Package types to use

- [Instructor] So as we're preparing to begin our design, another thing we should think about is what kind of parts we're going to be using. And there's lots and lots of ways to attack that problem. But here, in particular, I want you to think about the package you'll be using. And there's two major kinds of package. So there's through-hole technology and there's surface-mount technology, or SMT, sometimes called SMD. So here we see examples of through-hole technology. Even if you've never participated in electronics design before, if somebody says a computer chip, this might be the kind of thing you would think about. And these objects are relatively large, maybe an inch long, and those little pins you see, those little feet, actually stick down into a hole that's plated with metal. So those are larger elements, and they're actually a little bit more expensive these days because they're being compared to surface-mount technology.
