Choosing the right final product and audience

- We've all done projects. The dreaded science fair project, the dioramas, the popsicle stick models. And perhaps you even had a 1960's day. I did it in my own classroom. Or, dress as your favorite literary character day. However, we know that projects are just that, projects. They tend to cause more anxiety for the parents and when the grade has been entered in the grade book, the project simply ends up being a project for the garbage. It's time we change from the garbage project mentality and move toward designing a more relevant and authentic challenge for our students. Step 1: Determine how experts would showcase their work. What do they do in the real world? Is it more appropriate for students to present a proposal to a panel of experts? However, you may find it's more feasible and more realistic for students to send their final proposals in to a particular organization that may be able to affect the desired change in the proposal.
