- Supporting and sustaining learner attention requires more than focusing on a specific task or maintaining a distraction-free learning environment. Attention is also governed by the dimension of time. Designing for e-learning must accommodate attention span, the amount of time the learner can be expected to maintain their focus on the learning process without becoming disinterested or fatigued. Learners can become bored very quickly, sometimes within minutes. Our brains which use significant amounts of energy as much as 20% of what the whole rest of our bodies consume will begin to tire after about 20 minutes of focused attention. When this happens, even the most motivated of learners stop paying attention. Their minds begin to wander. The hippocampus quiets down and learning is no longer happening.
