- One of the most common ways for quantitative researchers to gather consistent data is through questionnaires or surveys. Using a questionnaire or survey creates a standard process for your research team to share, record, and store the data. In short, everyone participates in the same way, everyone answers the same questions, and every answer makes it back to the research team. There are a variety of ways to administer questionnaires or surveys, including by hand, through the mail, by telephone, over the computer, in a group setting, or even through a one-on-one interview. The needs of your research study will dictate how you get people to participate. Most importantly, for the reliability of your study, you need every respondent to use the instrument the same way. If one group receives the survey to fill out, while a second group gets it over the phone, and a third group is interviewed, there will be excessive noise in the data, which may make the research findings insignificant…
