- [Instructor] Another common type of GMAT word problem is distance equals rates times time problems. Sometimes better known as distance equals r times t, D equals RT. So in this video, we'll look at an example of a rate problem. So let's read this thing. Julian, that is modeled after Julian Edelman, star of the Patriots, received a football kickoff in his team's end zone and then ran it back 108 yards for a touchdown at an average speed of 12 yards per second. He then walked back to his own goal line at an average speed of three yards per second. What was his average speed overall in yards per second? So if you think about this, we've got two distance equals rate times time equations to think about. This is trip number one where he ran. And then we have trip number two where he walked. And let's just fill in what we know to see what we can solve for. So trip number one remember he's running. Now we know the distance is 108 yards. So we'll fill in that.
