Research instrument structure

- One of the biggest differences between quantitative and qualitative research is the instrument you'll use to conduct your research. You can use the term instrument in both methodologies, but in qualitative, the instrument is the individual researcher or the research team. In quantitative, the instrument is independent of the research team and structured so it collects valid and reliable data. A survey, questionnaire, or test exists separately from the members of the research team and can collect specific data on a topic. Sometimes, you'll see the term instrumentation. Now, this isn't the same thing as the instrument. When you're discussing the specific device you'll use to collect data, use the term instrument. Instrumentation, on the other hand, is a term that describes the development of your instrument as well as its testing and later application in data collection.
