- [Instructor] Okay, in this video we'll look at some of the rules that we need to know for roots and radicals and talk about some of the basics you'll need to know regarding those concepts. So let me just give you a couple of easy examples to start with. What if we said, well, what is the square root of nine? The square root of nine is three because three times three equals nine. And on the GMAT we're typically just worried about the positive square root of a number. Likewise, we could say, well, what is the cube root of eight? This means what number times itself times itself again would equal eight? So the cube root of eight is two because two times two times two equals eight. So we can have negative cube roots too. What is the cube root of negative 27? So in other words, which number times itself times itself again would equal negative 27? That would be negative three, 'cause negative three times negative three is nine, times negative three would by negative 27. So notice that we…
