- [Instructor] So if we're serious about performing well on sentence correction questions, and of course we are, we need to make sure we talk about the basic components of sentences, i.e. parts of speech, so being able to recognize parts of speech in the wild, and having them in your vocabulary, just kind of like knowing the basic rules of arithmetic and algebra, before you tackle more complex math problems. So in this video we'll go over the basic parts of speech that you need to know for the GMAT. The first is nouns, so nouns are people, places or things. For example, Sally Ride, Mars, Bitcoin, or motherhood. These are all nouns. Gerunds can act like nouns, so these are verbs that kind of act like nouns. So the lowering of my risk factors, the lowering kind of acts as a noun, even though technically that's a verb, so we call that a gerund. Pronouns are words used in place of nouns, so the words it, he, that, and which, are all pronouns. So if I said Oprah lent me her beachfront…
