- [Narrator] So thankfully, the GMAT is not going to ask you to actually calculate the standard deviation of a set of data, since that's usually kind of time-consuming. Instead, you'll probably be asked to compare sets and determine which set has a larger standard deviation or work with standard deviation as a value. So, let's just say I had a set of numbers and then I had another set of numbers; this other set of numbers was that. And you were asked, "Which one of these do you think "has the bigger standard deviation?" Well, we can kind of tell just by looking at it. The bottom one does, because if we were to calculate the mean of this bottom set of data, we have sort of more outliers, numbers that are farther away from the mean. And if you think about this top set, everything is kind of clustered together right at the mean. This is also illustrated like if we had a graph.
