- [Instructor] So one of the most important word problem skills for the GMAT is the ability to create equations from words. So in this video we'll look at a typical problem that we can make two equations from then solve them. So let's read this thing. Orville's Organics, they only sell pears and papayas, for some reason. Each pear is sold for a buck 25, and each papaya is sold for $2.50, the store's total revenue for one day is $60 and 30 pieces of fruit were sold. How many pears were sold? Okay, so my first tip is call your unknown X. And this is just going to let us start to be able to build an equation. So well we have a couple unknowns, let's call the number of pears, let's call that X, and let's call the number of papayas Y. Okay, so now we have a way of representing these unknown quantities in terms of variables. Well can we make an equation so far? Well yeah, I think so.
