Taking percents and increasing by percents
- [Narrator] So, one of the biggest complaints I get from people about working with percents is the wording used in percent questions. So in this video we'll cover how to take percents of numbers and increase and decrease numbers by percents. And we'll talk about how to make sure the wording makes sense for these concepts. So, let's say we are asked to take a percent of a number. Let's say I was ask to take 25% of 80. Well, that just means that I multiply 80 by 0.25. And you may know that the word of is the same thing as multiply. So, if I did 80 times 0.25, I would prefer to rewrite 0.25 as the fraction one fourth, then I get 80 over four, which is 20. So if I'm taking a percent of a number I'm basically just multiplying the number by that percent. What if we're asked to increase 80 by 25%? This is a little bit different wording. Increase 80 by 25%. Well, the way that I like to think about this is that we just have to take 25% of 80 and then add it to 80. So, we already know that 25%…
