- If you're starting a research study with your institution, you've probably heard the term IRB. Institutions that develop and implement research studies have a governing body called an IRB, or an Institutional Review Board, which approves and observes research involving human subjects. If your research is going to interact in any way with human subjects, you'll need to receive IRB approval in advance. This often consists of completing several tutorials about ethics and human subjects as well as filling out a proposal form provided by your IRB. This is important because when you collect data from a person, there's a risk to them. That risk can be significant or it can be minimal, but any potential for harm based on a person participating in your research must be addressed, as well as the reason for the duress, and your plans to protect your subjects.
