Keeping your movies goal-oriented

One of the main characteristics we try to maintain with our individual videos here at Lynda.com is to keep them short and goal-oriented. Usually around 5 to 10 minutes in length. We strive to keep our movies bite sized for a couple of different reasons. First of all, it's easier to hold your viewers' attention with shorter videos. Even if they intend to watch your entire course front to back, it can be less daunting for them to look down at the playback bar in the movie player and see that a movie will take up 4 minutes rather than looking down and seeing that they're about to start a 20-minute movie. Secondly, shorter movies allow you to keep the focus on single topics. As I discussed earlier, many viewers are not going to watch an entire course from start to finish. But will instead scan through your table of contents looking for a single video dedicated to the topic they want to learn, so they can then get back to work.
