- Many students do not come to college prepared for the academic rigor or for the amount of time they need to study. You can't just expect them to magically learn to study. You need to equip them with tools they'll need to be successful. Students often need to learn several critical study skills. The first, time management, is a critical skill and here's a few tips that you can share with your students that deal directly with time management in college. Tell the students to print a month view of a calendar and write all of their class times, work commitments, and other required activities on that calendar. Encourage them to record items like meals, and even write down time for social activities. Then tell the students to block off periods of time for each class called study times.
