Now that we have WordPress up and running, let's customize some settings to help our class run smoothly. In the General Settings, there's a Membership option. You will want to keep this option not checked most of the time, in order to maintain some control over who is able to become a member of your class. During your first class meeting, it's a good idea to check this option, in order to allow all of your students to create an initial account on your course site. Just be sure to de-select the option after class. Next, let's make sure that the New User Default Role is set to the lowest access level, which is Subscriber. You can always elevate a student or a co-instructor's access on an individual basis, but this setting will ensure that everyone comes in with the right baseline.
