From the course: Teaching Techniques: Blended Learning

Understanding blended learning

- Blended learning mixes the best of face-to-face instruction with the best of online instruction to create a student-centered approach to teaching and learning. The approach focuses on effectiveness and increasing student engagement and student ownership of the learning process. A blended course typically has a significant portion of the instruction delivered in both a face-to-face classroom and online. The mixing of modes of instruction provides the teacher with the flexibility to fine tune their course to take full advantage of the benefits of both modes to better meet the needs of their students. Blended learning is all about good teaching. It's about knowing your students, knowing yourself, and your course, and then finding the right mix of tools and techniques to help your students learn. The approach we'll be taking throughout the rest of this course is to begin by looking at a pedagogical framework for teaching and learning, and then explore a variety of tools and techniques that can be used in a blended course. One of the great things about blended learning is that this is not an all or nothing approach. It's more about picking and choosing the right blend for you and your students in your class to produce a great experience.
