- What's in a name? We encounter domain names on a constant basis. But what are they? How do they work, and why does it matter for a class using WordPress? Quite simply, domain names are the addresses of the internet. And they all work in a very predictable way. Once you understand how to read them, you'll be amazed at how helpful they are while you're building and refining your class WordPress site. Consider the following URL, or Universal Resource Locator. If we break this URL down into its component parts, we start with the top level domain. You're already familiar with many of these. These will be the .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov. They're reserved and tightly controlled, and the top level domain is the first component of a domain name. The second is really a subdomain of the top level domain.
