- When you're trying to clean up data 2 or analyze data in Excel, 3 it can be useful at times to know 4 and to get a character count or even a word count. 5 And we rely on some of Excel's text functions 6 to get the job done. 7 And over in Column G, we see three of them 8 that we will be using, Len, Substitute and Trim. 9 We're looking at the data in Column A. 10 Our part numbers should be six characters. 11 They should have no spaces. 12 It's pretty obvious we've got a few problems here and there. 13 Some of these are too long, some are too short 14 but we've got a huge list, 15 imagine much bigger than this one. 16 We want a character count here. 17 We use the function called Len. 18 Think of the word length. 19 We're looking at the data here. 20 How many characters are there? 21 Now as you count the actual characters, you see six 22 but there are two spaces in there. 23 So what's our result? 24 Eight. 25…
