- In this worksheet called ApproximateMatch we're about to use either the VLOOKUP function to compare a Salary with information in the left column of this table that's in G, H, or possibly use the HLOOKUP function and compare a Salary with the top row of this table over here. That would be using the HLOOKUP function. The VLOOKUP function is much more commonly used, let's start with it. As we talk about VLOOKUP functions, and this will be true of HLOOKUP functions as well, there are two major types. Sometimes we use these functions for an exact match. For example, we're looking up someone's name, or a social security number, or an ID number. That number has to be exact. What we're about to do here is called an approximate match. We've got some salaries here, we certainly can't list every salary over here in this table. We could theoretically, it would be huge, but the idea here is none of these salaries matches up any of these. Now certainly one of them could, one of them might, but…
