Outliers

- Nowadays, we hear the term outlier quite a bit. Often, it's used to describe some strange outcome. For example, a normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100. One patient has a resting heart rate of 40, 20 beats lower than the expected range. Doctors might consider that an outlier. A 12-year-old child that graduates from college with honors, 10 years before most people. Most would say that that kid is an outlier. And consider this. Someone has a resting heart rate of 53. That's only seven beats below the expected range. Or if someone graduates college at 19, three years earlier than most. I guess what I'm asking is what exactly makes something an outlier? Most disciplines that count on statistics say that an outlier is a data point that is an abnormal distance from the other values in the dataset. But what's abnormal? Believe it or not, there is no singular definition of abnormal in the world of statistics.…
