Using the Ideas tool

- The most recent version of Excel has an exciting new tool that helps you explore your data. It's called Ideas, let's get right into it. Here's a spreadsheet that shows expenditures in R&D and various fields in US universities and the indicated years. The values are in millions of dollars. I took the data from a National Science Foundation report via the US statistical abstract. The spreadsheet tab is called "R&D Expenditures." What kind of insights can we pull out of the data? To answer this question, we'll use the Ideas tool represented by the lightning bolt icon on the right, in the home tab. I've copied the data into a tab called "Copy" because I'll use the data in a couple of ways. But first "R&D Expenditures." The Ideas tool works best when the data are in a Excel table, a structure I really don't discuss in this course. So click on any cell in the data set. Type "Control + T" in the pop up window, make sure the "My data has headers" check box is checked and click "OK." The…
