- Whether you're using a mouse or a trackpad, moving the mouse or moving a finger on the trackpad moves what we call the cursor around the Excel screen. I'm simply moving this in a circle right now, I'm using a mouse. This is referred to as the cursor and its typical look much of the time is what we call a three dimensional plus. Now, at different times, this pointer changes. If I slide leftward and put it on a boundary between rows, notice how we see a two way up-down arrow. As I slide this on the boundary between columns B and C, up between the letters there, it's a two way left-right arrow. If I go down to cell B3, or any cell, and point to its corner, the mouse pointer changes from a three-dimensional plus into what we call a crosshairs or a thin plus. So the mouse pointer changes. As we slide it in to the ribbon menu system, notice how it becomes an arrow. So the pointer, whether you're using mouse or cursor, does change its appearance at different times.
