The order of operations

- When I say the order of operations, it really means the steps in the right order. A lot of people don't experience success with social media because they rush the process. I'd like you to think about it this way when discussing social media, and try to do the steps in the right order. The first step is listening. Before you start publishing content into a new platform or a community, you need to actively participate and observe. What's accepted? What performs well? What are people reacting to? What are they enjoying? What brings forth the type of reaction what you want? Paying attention to success will help you discover which behaviors to emulate. Next is following. Start to follow those content creators who are succeeding. You can learn from them. Pay attention to what they do. Learn from their successes and their mistakes. See how they react to things and what you can pick up from them that you should emulate in your own actions on that platform. Then curation. And this is a stage that you never need to leave. Part of succeeding on social media is sharing good content, and that content doesn't always need to be your own. Taking time to share content that you find useful or interesting will help you connect with people of similar interests, which is often a good step in building a successful social network or finding prospective clients. Next is trying to help. By being involved in answering questions, sharing resources, and just being seen as useful, you're going to be more appealing to those in the community. If you are standoffish or don't participate or ever help, it's going to be difficult when you need somebody to connect with you. It's not about just being there telling people how awesome you are. You need to be a member of the community so they want to engage with you and see you as a resource. The final stage is the original content stage. And, remember, you don't actually ever move past the trying to help or the curation stages. This is the stage where you start to make content that helps you stand out, shows that you're unique, and allows you to share the content that you want to be known for. Don't rush these steps. It is a process. And even if you're very experienced, it's tempting to skip over them. But I can't emphasize enough take the time to get familiar with the new tool or platform or community and start to observe it and find the people who are succeeding that you can follow or emulate. Then as you start to create content, don't forget it's important to be seen as a resource that helps out. Curation and trying to help are two important steps in building a successful social network.
