Assembling a crew

- Selecting your crew is as important as selecting your talent. We usually work with skeleton crews. I love the flexibility and increased speed we can achieve, but working this way requires people who are very good at different skills. Regardless the budget, you absolutely and positively need someone to perform the producer's role and be on top of all the small and big details. A good producer makes everything flow effortlessly. The director is, among many other things, the person keeping the integrity of the story as close to the original as possible. The DP's input on crafting the story's mood and color palette is absolutely essential. Two additional key collaborators are the gaffer and the grip. The gaffer is typically the chief lighting technician on set, and with the DP, he or she is responsible for designing and rigging the lighting gear. The grip is in charge of the grip equipment.
