- Digital cameras use media cards to record to. The media cards could differ from model to model and have different requirements. It seems like every time a new camera comes out it requires a new type of media card that is, inevitably, the most expensive. It's important to know the types of media and the cost of them so you can budget them into the camera purchase. First, let's explore how these cards work. There are two important factors to consider when buying any media, size and speed. The size is how much video it can hold. The higher the gigs the more expensive. The speed is how fast it can read and write the data to the card. The faster cards also cost more. Shooting in 4K or in high frame rates requires pretty fast cards and if you shoot in 4K the files are going to be at least twice the size of HD.
