- Let's move on to the visual rules of cinematography in filmmaking. The first rule is that there are no rules. This is important because one has to be careful about getting distracted and losing sight of the audiences' experience of the movie that's being made. The cinematographer shouldn't do something because there's some rule written somewhere that says that they have to do this or that. You know, it's important to avoid generic filmmaking. It's important to be specific in the choices you make in the movie so that what you're doing has the desired effect on the audience. Filmmakers establish certain patterns, often somebody to break them for story purposes. It's important to say, "Pay attention to this moment, "what just happened really matters." Our brains send us signals to alert us to changes in our environment. This is a survival function. In addition, the brain can only pay attention to so many things at once.
