- When we think of the word budget we usually associate it with money, and so we should. Even when we have an extremely small amount to work with as in this case. But budgeting also applies to time. Having very clear and realistic timeframes for your project is essential. Everything costs money. Driving to scout a location costs gas and tolls. Meeting to write scripts costs money in coffee and food. You might need, at the very least, a dedicated hard drive to store and back up your footage. Be realistic. There is a lot you can do on the cheap, but don't assume that just because you own a camera, and a laptop, and a couple of lights, you can write a film project that will be effectively free. It is important to consider up front cost and logistics. This includes, among many other things, location insurance, applying for phone permits, gathering releases, securing the rights for footage.
