How long should the day be?

- We've already talked a little bit about this, but I wanted to talk specifically about how long the day should be. By the way, the shoot day is usually just referred to as "the day." So you might say, for example, let's rehearse this now without props, but on "the day" you'll have props. So how long should you make the day? The bottom line is that I don't have a specific number for you. The standard workday in most places is, of course, about eight hours, not including meals. But for non-union, low-budget film sets, it's very common to go longer. We certainly did on the second day of production on the Assurance. But it's important to not do that lightly or frequently. Because I knew we were going to need a long day because of the night shoot, I scheduled that in the middle of our main three-day production schedule.
