It must have conflict! No, it mustn’t!

- I've said that every story, including yours, must have tension in order to provide a satisfying resolution. The best way to create that tension is with conflict. Let's see how it's done. Take our caveman. For him and his tribe, storytelling was a valuable tool for problem-solving. He didn't tell his buddy a story just because there wasn't anything interesting painted on the wall. He wanted to communicate valuable information in a memorable way. How do I hunt without getting hurt? How do I deal with that nasty tribe of valley people over next the hill? Stories were instruction manuals for life. Today we still find stories most entertaining when they show us how to solve a problem. And that means we must introduce conflict, the pitting of two opposite forces against one another. So our story needs conflict, so far so good. But where do we find this conflict, these opposing forces? Storytellers find conflict everywhere. Can you guess what the opposing forces of conflict are in a book…
