- Now that we've talked about lenses, focal length, and aperture, let's talk about how to actually get the lens onto the camera. A lens mount is where the lens attaches to the body of the camera and locks into place. There are several different types for different camera manufacturers. The main ones are, Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Micro Four Thirds. At first glance, they look the same, but lens mounts are not universal. For example, a Nikon lens just won't intuitively fit on a Canon body. Now, you can use lens adapters to get almost any lens to work on different bodies. This means, you can use a Canon lens on say, this Sony body. To do this, I have to use an adapter like this one, which has electronic contacts in it that allow the Canon lens to talk to the Sony mount. It's like a computer interpreter, so they can communicate and work together. But don't expect your lens to work as well as it would on the mount it was designed for, especially if you like auto focus. The adapter technology…
