- There are three basic categories of lights. There are lots of kinds of lights, but to one degree or another, they all fit somewhere in these categories. Knowing the inherent strengths and weaknesses of each light will help you pick the right light for each job. This is a Fresnel. It's called that because of the Fresnel lens in front of it. The lens focuses the light onto the subject. It has a bulb in front of a reflector, at the rear of the housing, that can move closer to or further from the lens on a threaded track. This allows the light coming through the lens to be either spotted to a narrow beam or flooded for a wider spread when you turn the spot/flood control. Fresnels are used when you want better control of where the light does or doesn't go. The Fresnel creates a single shadow. That means the shadow is sharp on the subject and on the wall behind him. This also means we can cut the light relatively easily. We do this by means of these metal blades we call barn doors. We can…
