Orient the audience

- Given that understanding the visual world is such a complex thing to master, we need to talk about how we keep the audience informed about what's happening in the world we're creating. The world filmmakers create is fake. These people on screen are not married, but we want the audience to believe they are. This is not where they live. We'll be shooting shots and scenes in an order different from the order in which they'll be presented onscreen. We don't want the audience to think about any of this stuff. However, the audience is smart. They know this is a movie. The audience wants to pretend along with us that these things are real. Scholars call this the willing suspension of disbelief. However, we don't want to push this too far. There's a point beyond which the artifice calls attention to itself. And the audience stops cooperating with us.
