- We've talked about cameras, but we haven't actually talked about the way the image is recorded. Compressed and stored, let's review that now. It's important that the method of recording the image matches the cameras method of creating it. Otherwise the cinematographer could find himself throwing away a lot of image quality and money by shooting with the right camera but recording the image in the wrong way or the other way around. For the sake of simplicity I'm going to continue to use the term "record" to talk about the way we transfer and store digital footage. The image is transferred to a drive using software to describe the way the image is to be stored and eventually retrieved. The amount of data required to transfer and store that image is referred to as bandwidth. Bandwidth is a reliable measure of image quality.
