- Flying cross country to scout locations is obviously impossible with our micro-budget. The great news is that nowadays we don't need to do that, or even bring a lot of gear to scout the location. Google Earth includes so many features that allow you to measure distances and areas. And you can virtually access any location and determine accurate sunrise and sunset times, interesting vantage points, and even find nearby restaurants and hotels for the production. I cannot think of any other tool that has saved me so much money over the years. Assuming you have a tiny budget or no budget at all a great place to start looking for locations is with your friends and family. We have shot many courses in films at locations provided by extremely generous friends. From Milk and Honey Cafe, thanks to Max, Lehman's Multimedia Center, thanks to Brendan, and a fantastic house in Upstate New York, thanks to Michelle and Andre.
