Shotgun microphone
- Now Rich, as you alluded to, there are a few different ways that you can get audio when somebody is not in close proximity to you. Now obviously that's going to involve being nontethered to them to a certain degree. - Yeah. - And probably the most tried and true method of doing that is the on-camera shotgun mic. What's a shotgun mic all about? - Well essentially it's a highly directional mic. A lot of microphones pick up things in a very round pattern or in a heart shaped pattern but a shotgun mic is kind of tight and focused and it tends to pick up things that are in front of the camera but not so much the camera operator or things to the side of the camera. - Exactly. And so this is a fairly typical on-camera sort of ENG style shotgun mic and these are obviously gonna come in a lot of different styles, lengths, sensitivities, with different features like roll-off patterns and pads and all sorts of stuff to attenuate the audio but the idea with all of them is the same.
