What is 3–2–1 backup?

- Hey there, I'm Robbie Carman. - And I'm Rich Harrington. - In which this week, we're going to talk about something that is near and dear to my heart, that is data integrity and a backup scheme. - Yeah, it's really important that you keep your files safe whether you're in the field shooting or back at the office and we're going to cover both types of strategies. What it really comes down to is you need to make sure you have more than one copy, and I see people screw this up all the time, they'll make a bad copy of a bad copy and they're hosed and they've erased their cards, or, they only have one copy and they send that back with somebody and then a bag gets lost, there's so many different ways that you can screw this up, and if you screw up the shoot it can get really expensive, you can lose a client, you could be legally liable. - Absolutely, and I would also go to say that, you know, simply doing a file copy from one location to another location sometimes isn't enough. If you're on a big production you're not even going to get, be able to get insurance for that production unless you're adhering to certain standards like check sums and, you know, LTO and things of that nature. People are pretty rigid about data for a very good reason when it comes to very large productions and getting the insurance and things of that nature, but all the tools to do this Rich are really accessible and the thing that I always stress most to people about backing up is just have a plan and stick to that plan. Every production and you know project is going to be a little different but as long as you have a plan on how to do these things, you should be safe. - So what we're talking about is 3, 2, 1 backup, three copies making sure you've got three distinct copies from the original card or media format, not a copy of a copy, and you're going to need those on two different types of storage formats, now this might be a raided drive, an SSD, but ideally you're going to integrate something else in there like an LTO, some other format, - [Robbie] Yup. - [Rich] And one of those needs to be offsite. - [Robbie] That's right. - We're going to explore each part of 3-2-1 Backup and give you some ideas from no budget to big budget on how to keep your data safe.
