What is the "right" Shutter Speed?

- Hi, my name's Rich Herrington. - And I'm Robbie Carman. - And, welcome, this week we're going to be talking about shutter speed. Which, Rob, it's kinda like math, and most video, creative people are like, "Ooh, numbers." And I gotta admit, for the longest time, this was just one of those things that I kinda set it to a number I was told to use and I never really understood why. - Yeah, you're gonna see shutter speed expressed in one of two ways. You're gonna see, sort of it, in time interval. 1 over something. 1 over 50. 1 over 60, etc. Or you'll see it in a degree number. 180 degrees or 172.8 degrees. Those are really pretty much the same thing, and you can go on, you know, just search for, on Wikipedia for shutter speed. And you can find the formulas that are involved. But essentially shutter speed has the biggest impact on motion in a shot. It's kind of how long that shutter's gonna be open and closed to expose the sensor or, in the good old days, film, and as I said, it's direct…
