What is transcoding?

- Hi there, I'm Robbie Carman. - And I'm Rich Harrington. - And Rich, this week, we want to talk about transcoding, what it is, when you should do it, and when, maybe you should not do it. And I think that transcoding is one of those things that, its kind of a buzzword, right? People hear a lot about transcoding, but don't necessarily know what it is or don't really have the best practices for transcoding. - Yeah. Essentially, I think we should breakdown what transcoding is and is not and it's gonna be largely dependent upon your editing system. - [Robbie] Yeah. - [Rich] Transcoding is essentially converting from one format to another. Now, usually, this results in a larger file that's actually easier for your computer to playback. A good example is taking something like a GoPro, which is highly compressed footage, and then using the GoPro software to convert it using the CineForm codec that GoPro now ships with, or, maybe Rob, it's using something like Final Cut X, which, while it…
