When to use a variable ND

- Now Rob, a variable ND filter is a lot like a circular polarizer in that it is designed to sort of rotate around itself, and that adjusts how it behaves. - [Rob] Yeah, that's true. Most commonly, these filters are gonna be found as screw-on type filters in sizes to match your lenses. And the back part of the filter, that's what actually screws onto the lens, and the front part of the filter can rotate around that rear element, adjusting how much neutral density is applied to the incoming light. - Yeah, and you can see here as we adjust this that a lot of changes are affected by how much light passes through. Now one of the most important things about a variable ND filter is the number of stops that it is going to reduce. You'll typically see ND filters that are rated between two to eight stops or one to five stops, and basically this means how much light it knocks down. On the other hand, if you're dealing with other styles of neutral density filters, they might be labeled point six…
