Why room tone matters

- Louisa, why do you love room tone? - Well, Amy, I love room tone for a number of reasons. First and foremost, because silence doesn't really exist. There is always a background noise going in any shoot that we have. In addition to that, if we have an unwanted noise that we don't want, I need that room tone to get rid of the noise. Because most audio programs work with noise cancellation technology, and what that simply means is that they reverse the waveforms, put them one on top of the other, and they just cancel each other out. So I get a much less background noise if I actually have the room tone. - And you have the noise by itself, not mixed with voice or music or some other sound. - Correct, by itself. That is what actually allows me to get rid of it later on in post. - Now one of the things I like to do is I like to shoot the microphone when we're rolling on room tone. You can certainly put room tone on a slate, and that's fine, too. But I prefer to shoot the microphone…
